Dussehra is one of the most important Hindu festivals and is widely celebrated in India. Dussehra also known as Dashain, Dasara or Vijayadashami. It is celebrated as per the rules of Hindu calendar and is usually celebrated in the month of Ashvin on the 10th day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha), twenty days before Diwali, another major festival of the Indians, commonly known as the festival of lights.
Dussehra holds immense religious importance in the life of Hindus as it marks the victory of good over evil and is celebrated in honor of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon King Ravana, who according to the epic Ramayana had kidnapped Lord Rama’s consort Sita who was also the Princess of Maithili.
Different parts of India celebrate the festival differently.
For example, in the northern and southern part, Effigies of Ravana is burnt to signify his defeat by Lord Rama.
While in the eastern part, Vijayadashami is celebrated as the triumph of Goddess Durga over the indestructible Buffalo king Mahishasura.
Two most important places that celebrate Dussehra with great pomp and show are Kolkata and Mysore.

The next most important destination for Dussehra celebration is the city of Mysore. It is known for its grand celebration of Dussehra the event from which the city is known to have received its name! This day signifies the defeat of the demon Mahisasura by Goddess Chamundeshwari, which is another name of Goddess Durga.
