Why is it celebrated?
Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival that marks the celebration of Lord Ganesha’s birthday; a Hindu mythology elephant-headed God. He is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The festival has more names like Vinayak Chavithi or Vinayak Chaturthi. It is celebrated in the month of mid-August or September which is the month of Bhadra as per Hindu calendar. Chhatrapati Shivaji started the worship of Lord Ganesha as a non-community event.
The significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Like other festivals that are celebrated in India and have mentioned in Hindu mythology, Ganesh Chaturthi too has a lot of significance. The celebration lasts for 10 days and people all over the country bring Lord Ganesha’s idol. After 10 days, the idols are submerged in rivers with a grand celebration.
Lord Ganesha is worshipped before any other Hindu God. People worship Lord Ganesha before starting any new work as he is believed to bring success and prosperity. He is considered a God of wisdom and power. There are various stories in Hindu mythology where he is described to solve all complicated matters in a clever way. Facts about the festival
- The festival started as the non-community festival by Chatrapati Shivaji and later it was changed from a private celebration to the public event by Lokmanya Tilak to eradicate the differences between different castes.
- The festival starts on Shukla Chaturthi as per Hindu calendar. It is the fourth day of the waxing moon period and it ends on 14th day again on waxing moon period on Anant Chaturthi.
